Japanese Natural Hot Springs Are The Natural Way to Relax

For a society which is well renowned for its long work hours and the inevitable stress that comes with it, the Japanese still have one source of leisure which has stood the test of time. This is the Japanese “onsen” – which are Japanese natural hot springs produced for both outdoor and indoor baths.

The benefit of being a volcanically active country allows for “onsen” throughout the country. They were initially used as public bathing places but today can be seen as one of the key features of Japanese domestic tourism. They are generally found in the countryside and also can be found within major cities.

According to the Japanese Ryokan Association, (ryokans are Japanese Inns which generally houses the “onsen”), the average prices of JRA member ryokans range from 5,000yen to 119,000yen per person (approximately $50 USD - $1190USD). Guests are generally charged per person rather than per room as with Western cultures. This price includes an evening meal on your arrival and also breakfast the following day. Some guests can even have the luxury of having a hot spring bath on the balcony of their room.

The Japan Onsen Association confirmed that despite the financial crisis the number of onsen visitors for 2009 was 132,677,925 (on par with previous years). The total number of “onsen” for the same year in Japan was 3133. The top ten prefectures for onsen are as follows: Hokkaido, Nagano, Niigata, Aomori, Fukushima, Akita, Shizuoka, Kagoshima, Gunma and Yamagata. Popular onsen locations include Hakone, Atami, Ito and Kusatsu.

In short, there is great potential for companies in the spa and leisure industry. If they can find a way to appeal to Japanese society they have a good chance to expand their business since (as we have seen from the aforementioned information), Japanese people have a high tendency to spend on their relaxation; not only for overseas travel, but more importantly within their own country.
